11 Models with random effects

Random effects arise when there is variation among the measurements taken from `units’ in an experiment but we wish to regard this variation as representative of the wider population of units. Sometimes we take measurements from constituent parts of the units, giving the variation a hierarchical (or multilevel) structure.
